Anthony Fiumara (Tilburg, The Netherlands, 1968) holds a master’s degree in musicology from the University of Utrecht. He has been visiting lecturer at the conservatoires of Amsterdam and Zwolle while working as a music editor for Donemus (publishing house for contemporary Dutch music). As a composer, Anthony Fiumara studied privately with Richard Rijnvos.
In 2008, his work Aperture was performed in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw and recorded for national radio as part of the concert series ZaterdagMatinee. In 2009, he created a sound/lightscape for the Concert Hall of the 21st Century (Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ) together with light artist Jaap van den Elzen in the context of the Dutch Music Days.
In March 2010, the North Netherlands Symphony Orchestra performed the piano concerto Aerial with Ralph van Raat as soloist. In addition to his work as a composer, Fiumara has orchestrated and arranged works by others – including Steve Reich, John Adams, Brian Eno, Aphex Twin, and Massive Attack.
Fiumara is also active as a music journalist. His articles appear internationally in books, magazines, and CD booklets. Fiumare writes about music for the Dutch daily newspaper Trouw and has made radio programmes.
In 2005, he translated Keine Angst vor neuen Tönen (Wie is er bang voor nieuwe klanken, Cossee Publishers) a book on new music by the German conductor Ingo Metzmacher.
Fiumara was artistic director of Orkest De Volharding and Compagnie Bischoff. He co-founded and co-managed the OUTPUT Festival (electric guitar in contemporary music).
In 2009, Lunapark was set up as the brainchild of Fiumara and percussionist Arnold Marinissen. The ensemble does not confine itself to one particular musical genre or style, instead focusing on cross-pollination between disciplines. Fiumara contributes original compositions as well as arrangements.
In 2010, Fiumara set new poems to music for the literary producing house Wintertuin, based on the medieval legend of the Swan Knight Helias.
2011 has seen the issue of Lunapark’s first CD, Flim, which features work and arrangements by Fiumara.
Anthony Fiumara is published by Deuss Music.
