solo for bass clarinet in de pont museum

flyer2
Tomorrow afternoon in De Pont in Tilburg, bass clarinetist Michel Marang is performing Shifiting Images, a concert in which he combines new works by Yannis Kyriakides, Joost van de Goor, Piet-Jan van Rossum, Jacob ter Veldhuis — and my Solo for Bass Clarinet — with photo sequences. Besides being a versatile instrumentalist, Michel Marang is also a brilliant photographer.

This will be the first performance of Solo for Bass Clarinet, a work I wrote in 2005. Solo is a very strict process piece, consisting only of four notes — a hermetic ritual of patterns. I want an electronic ‘cathedral’ reverb to give the tones and gestures more space — making it sound like a lightly articulated continuum, changing almost imperceptibly and slowly ascending.

Apart from his interest in classical music, theatre, and world-music, Marang specializes in contemporary music. He collaborated with many composers, including Olivier Messiaen, Morton Feldman, Edison Denisov and Karlheinz Stockhausen. Over thirty compositions were dedicated to him. In addition, Marang wrote music for several theatre productions, such as Nicky Somewhere Else, which was very successful on Broadway.
