Anthony Fiumara
(Tilburg 1968) is a composer and musicologist. He holds a
Master degree in musicology (University of Utrecht, 1993).
He was a lecturer at the Conservatories of Amsterdam and
Zwolle and he worked at Donemus (publishing house for
contemporary Dutch music) as a music editor. Articles of
his have appeared internationally in books, periodicals,
magazines and cd booklets. Fiumara has edited various
periodicals (Dutch Journal of Music Theory, Luister, Mens
en Melodie, to name some) and works as a music journalist
for the daily newspaper Trouw as well as hosting radio
programs. Fiumara is the Artistic Director of contemporary
wind ensemble Orkest De Volharding and vocal quintet
Compagnie Bischoff. Together with Wiek Hijmans, he is
founder and artistic manager of the OUTPUT Festival, the
Amsterdam electric guitar triennial.
In 1997, Fiumara transcribed-restaurated the Renaissance
coronation mass for King Philip II, Escobedo’s Missa
Philippus Rex Hispanie, resulting in a publication of the
score by Mapa Mundi, two cd recordings (by Westminster
Cathedral Choir and A Sei Voci), and a publication in Early
Music magazine. In 2005 he made a translation of Ingo
Metzmacher’s book on new music, and he is currently working
on a book on contemporary composers.
As a composer Fiumara took private lessons with Richard
Rijnvos. He has written a number of works for soloists and
for ensembles. For Orkest De Volharding, he arranged Short
Ride in a Fast Machine by John Adams, as well as Steve
Reich’s City Life, the latter published by Boosey &
Hawkes.
