Two new works on Black Pencil’s album Hyper Nature
I’m delighted that Ensemble Black Pencil has released its new album Hyper Nature, featuring not one but two of my works: Hyper_nature and Exposure. The CD brings together newly written contemporary music inspired by nature and land art in Flevoland, and it is a pleasure to hear these pieces in such vivid, committed performances.
Hyper_nature was written for the ALLUMINOUS light-art festival in Almere, in close response to Jaap van den Elzen’s luminous installation. Rather than treating nature as something untouched or lost, the work embraces our “hyper-nature”: a world shaped by human hands, artificial yet undeniably real and enchanting. The music moves like a living hyper-planetarium. Instruments circle one another in different orbits and at different speeds, while light and sound breathe together and transform the surrounding space into something both sacred and unmistakably contemporary.
Exposure responds to Antony Gormley’s monumental land-art sculpture on the shore of the Markermeer. When I first encountered the work, what struck me was not its stillness, but everything moving around it: shifting light, rolling clouds, restless water, and the changing seasons. The sculpture may appear fixed in time, yet it is constantly in dialogue with its environment. My music tries to capture that duality—the unstoppable momentum of time alongside moments of quiet reflection.
Hyper Nature completes Black Pencil’s remarkable Land Art Music project, with new compositions created for the ten iconic land-art works of Flevoland. I’m very grateful to Ensemble Black Pencil for their artistry, curiosity, and dedication throughout the creation and recording of these works.
The album is now available through
